Today’s podcast is NOT about why you can no longer eat sugar. Rather, today’s podcast is simply about bringing to light some of the concerns you should be aware of when eating sugar as well as giving you important diet and lifestyle tips (nine to be exact!) that can limit the negative effects.

Today's podcast discuses the nutritional supplements that are key to maximizing your workout.

My mantra for today's episode is - Make it count. You're going to the gym 3, 4, 5 times a week (or more!) and putting in tons of effort. Why not ensure you get the maximum results you can?

Guest Nicole Gould, RD, LD and I discuss how both women and men can benefit from:

	* Pre-Workout and Post-Workout products
	* Protein (and which type is best for building muscle)
	* Meal Replacements
	* Extras - like Safflower oil and CLA

Remember, it doesn't matter if you're trying to lose weight or bulk up, today's podcast will help you achieve your goal!

Confused?

It turns out that both hibiscus (A plant of the mallow family, known for its large brightly colored flowers) and artichoke, two common foods (well, hibiscus is usually consumed as a tea), have the uncanny ability to modulate the same cholesterol-producing enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) as common cholesterol medications. However, unlike common cholesterol medications, they both do so without causing any significant side-effects.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/tired-300x207.jpg)We are having an energy crisis! You can't go anywhere today without seeing little bottles that promise hours of energy. In fact, did you know we are now consuming over $1 billion a year in energy drinks?

I'd like to ask a question - why? I know it may seem like an obvious answer: we're tired, we're stressed out. True, but I still want to ask the question why? Why are we so tired? Why do we need to spend $1 billion every year on energy drinks? Stress has been around since we have, right? Ideally, wouldn't our diet be able to satisfy our needs to combat stress and fatigue?

Clearly it isn't.

While energy drinks may seem like a good way to bridge the gap, think again. Energy drinks have at least two major problems: First, most produce a crash. We feel great for a white, but then plummet to new depths later. Second, while these drinks succeed at temporarily pepping us up, they are not providing adequate nutritional support for the whole body.

Most people who are tired and stressed out. When you are under a great deal of stress, your adrenal glands are over taxed. But did you know your cardiovascular system takes a hit? How about your immune system? Enhancing energy is important, but it simply combats symptom of fatigue. It does nothing for the root cause.

On today's podcast you'll learn about a new product that can enhance and sustain your energy (without crashing), while supporting the entire body by combining a top-notch whole food multi-vitamin with a blend of clinically validated superfoods including rhodiola, maca and cordyceps.</itunes:summary>

Broccoli, and all the cruciferous vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage and cress among others contain compounds called glucosinolates including the somewhat well known Indole-3-carbinol. <itunes:subtitle>On today's podcast we discuss overcoming candida, urinary tract infections and biofilms with a very unique extract...of cranberry.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Cranberry-245x300.jpg)In today's podcast, guest Jen Luse and I discuss two common conditions affecting many today - an overgrowth of yeast or candida, and urinary tract infections.

Symptoms of candida overgrowth can include the obvious like yeast infections, thrush and athlete's foot, as well as the not so obvious like brain fog and headaches, while symptoms of a urinary tract infection, or UTI, are pretty straightforward including: a painful burning sensation when urinating or a frequent urge especially soon after going.

Bottom line - neither are fun and both can be very difficult to overcome. One major reason for this is the formation of biofilms - protecting communities that in this case keep the yeast or bacteria safe.

And that brings us to today's podcast where we discuss overcoming candida, achieving urinary health and defeating biofilms with a very unique and specific extract...of cranberry.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/probiotics-272x300.jpg)Over the last few years, probiotics have become increasingly popular and for good reason. Probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, play a major role in both immune and digestive health.

The problem is with greater awareness has come greater confusion. Walk into any healthfood store today and you are confronted with dozens of choices of confusing terms like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria and odd numbers like 10 billion, 20 billion even 200 billion colony forming units?

In today's podcast, I want to help clarify many of these issues including why you want a multi-strain product, what's with all the numbers and the importance whole foods can play in the overall effectiveness of your probiotic supplement. Guest: Jen Luse</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Skin_Care-201x300.jpg)Today I want to answer the question, 'Why natural skin care?' and then I want to answer the question, 'Why not natural skin care?' Okay, enough of me trying to be clever, here's what I mean...

Every day, so many of us spend a great deal of time carefully selecting the items we put in our bodies. We look for organic foods, purified water, natural and whole food supplements, all while we spend comparatively no time looking at what we put ON our bodies. In fact, it's very possible that the average consumer could place over 120 different chemicals on her skin before her first cup of organic coffee! That's why I want to answer, "Why natural skin care?'

Now on the other hand I think there's a stigma about natural skin care. That is, some will tell you that if you want real anti-aging, wrinkle repairing therapeutic benefit, you're going to have to look beyond Mother Nature for help. I don't believe this is true.

In fact, thanks to new clinical research on ingredients like plant stem cells and peptides, science is now demonstrating that Mother Nature can pack a powerful and non-toxic punch!

Today's podcast discusses this issue and more with guest Atali Carr (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001273188615&ref=ts) of MyChelle Dermaceuticals (http://www.mychelle.com/About-Us).</itunes:summary>

While IBS has become something of a 'catch-all' diganosis, there are some tell-tale signs and symptoms that include:

	* Onset of abdominal pain linked to more frequent bowel movements
	* Looser stools associated with the onset of pain
	* Relief of pain by passage of stool
	* Noticeable abdominal bloating
	* Feeling of incomplete evacuation more than 25% of the time
	* Diarrhea with mucus more than 25% of the time

While IBS comes in many shapes and sizes there do appear to be two major cateogires - IBS with constiaption and IBS with Diarrhea.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Reishi-Mushroom-300x217.jpg)Immune support is always a big topic this time of year. Our days are getting shorter, we’re spending more time indoors and inevitably, seasonal challenges will come knocking at our door. While there are many well known things we can do to stay well including regular hand washing and getting plenty of vitamin D, I’m always surprised by the general lack of awareness of one of nature’s most powerful sources of immune support – mushrooms!

The medicinal use of mushrooms dates back more than 10,000 years, and modern medicine is currently re-discovering, and confirming what our ancestors knew to be true: mushrooms and fungi contain some of the most potent medicine nature has to offer. Afterall penicillin, credited with saving thousands upon thousands, was isolated from fungi. But researches have continued to research since 1928. In fact, thousands of studies have been published on just a handful of mushrooms including Reishi (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=Reishi+mushroom&btnG=Search&as_sdt=100000000000&as_ylo=&as_vis=0), Shiitake (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=Shiitake+mushroom&btnG=Search&as_sdt=100000000000&as_ylo=&as_vis=0), Maitake (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=100000000000&q=Maitake+mushroom)and Chaga (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=100000000000&q=Chaga+Mushroom)confirming their ability to support our immune system, liver, sexual functioning, endurance, mental clarity and more!

With respect to immune health, mushrooms appear to modulate the immune system, constantly working to balance it. Powerful compounds in mushrooms called beta-glucans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta-glucan) have been shown to increase macrophage and natural immune killer cell activity.

Another important note about mushrooms is there’s more to them than meets the eye. While we are all familiar with the above ground, or fruiting body of the mushroom, probably the most powerful part of a mushroom is the part we don’t see, called the mycelia, often found underground. Once again, in nature the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

If you’re concerned with immune support, I highly recommend LifeShield (http://www.vchoice.com/search_results.asp?txtPFSearch=Lifeshield&ddlPFBrand=394&ddlPFCat=-1&storeID=WJU4DJ2CQFSR2L1C0G03N0ET9DG2FLQ7&blnPFS=1)® Immunity™ by New Chapter. Immunity includes the mushrooms I mentioned above which have over 2,300 combined references in the National Library of Medicine. New Chapter also uses the whole mushroom – the fruiting body, the mycelium and more with a minimum level of 15% beta-glucans. Finally, Immunity can be taken daily or as needed.

One final note - when looking for mushroom products be sure to check (and double check) the source of the mushrooms. Mushrooms will absorb whatever is in their environment. It's best to look for organically grown mushrooms when possible.

To learn more about the benefits of medicinal mushrooms listen-in on today’s podcast with Jen Luse of New Chapter.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Goutch.jpg)Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis. For many people, the first attack of gout occurs in the big toe. The result - a swollen, red, warm, and painful event.

It occurs when too much uric acid, a by-product of the metabolism of purines, which are organic compounds found in certain foods such as meat and seafood and some vegetables, builds up in the body.

Today's podcast discusses some natural options for reliving gout symptoms as well as what you can do to help prevent them from returning. We will discuss the role of natural anti-inflammatories as well as how enhancing kidney function, an often overlooked component of gout, can help combat this painful and often chronic condition. Guest: Dan Chapman found and CEO of Redd Remedies.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Air-Pollution-300x221.jpg)This past week I read an alarming statistic. According to a Centers for Disease Control report (http://www.cdc.gov/exposurereport/), 212 chemicals have been measured in an average person’s blood or urine, 75 of which have never before been seen in the U.S. population.

Furthermore, the recent President’s Cancer Panel published a landmark report (http://deainfo.nci.nih.gov/advisory/pcp/glance/At-a-Glance_Environmental.pdf) saying the U.S. government has been grossly underestimating the role environmental toxins play in our cancer risk.

Today’s podcast is not meant to be gloom and doom but is instead meant to help answer the question about what we can do to combat an ever-increasing toxic environment. We need to reduce our exposure while also enhancing our body’s ability to detoxify.

Today, we'll discuss how we can do this with Brenda Watson, N.D., C.N.C.

<itunes:subtitle>A new report, "Dangerous Supplements" from Consumer Reports has received a ton of attention from just about every media outlet you can think of. However, some are questioning the report and its thoroughness. To hear more about this topic,</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>A new report, "Dangerous Supplements (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/natural-health/dietary-supplements/overview/index.htm)" from Consumer Reports has received a ton of attention from just about every media outlet you can think of. In the report, the authors outlined the Dirty Dozen (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/natural-health/dietary-supplements/supplement-ingredients/index.htm), twelve of the most dangerous supplements that should be avoided at all costs. The report blasts the dietary supplement industry for having unsafe products and lack of regulations all of which lead to an unsafe environment for consumers.

Now, this topic concerns me quite a bit. After all, I believe in these products and their ability to help people get and stay healthy. If I'm being duped, if I'm playing Russian roulette every time I purchase a dietary supplement, I want to know about it. However, I want to know about it in a fair, accurate and balanced report and unfortunately, I don't think Consumer Reports has given us one.

If you haven't read the report (http://www.consumerreports.org/health/natural-health/dietary-supplements/overview/index.htm) yet, I encourage you to do so. There are some very interesting points made. And please don't misunderstand, I think this report in it's conception, was a good thing. But like so many things today, somewhere between conception and execution, the report leaves out some important points that when included, don't lead to such salacious headlines.

For example, one television news report claimed that based on the Consumer Reports findings as many as two-thirds of supplements are "contaminated" with ingredients that could cause serious health problems. This does not seem to agree with recent government statistics. According to an August 3rd, 2010 press release, the Natural Products Association stated:
The NPA questions the data Consumer Reports is using to suggest the dietary supplement industry suffers from inadequate quality controls. In actuality, evidence from the government suggests the contrary. Earlier this year, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) tested a number of products finding only trace amounts of contaminants, leading the FDA to testify before Congress that “we do not believe these levels represent a significant risk to health.” It is curious that Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports and also a witness at that hearing, did not mention this testimony in the article.
To hear more about this topic, including which points I agree with, listen in on today's podcast.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/SeminarPic-300x169.jpg)Last week I hosted a seminar, "Managing Inflammation to Support Bone, Joint & Heart Health" presented by Brian Hall of New Chapter Vitamins.

As the title implies, this seminar focused on the role inflammation plays in disease with a special emphasis on cardiovascular, bone and joint health and perhaps most importantly, what you can do about it.

Some of the topics include a review of the researched roles of the following: ginger, turmeric, green tea, holy basil, vitamin K2, vitamin D3 and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

While many were able to attend, many others were not. So I decided to record the seminar and include it as this week's podcast.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>A recent episode of the uber-popular Dr. Oz show discussed the dangers of supplements. While I like Dr. Oz and think this particular show is an important topic, I must disagree with several of Dr. Oz's statements today.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>A recent episode of the uber-popular Dr. Oz Show (http://www.doctoroz.com/) discussed the dangers of supplements. While I like Dr. Oz and think this particular show is an important topic, I must disagree with several of Dr. Oz's statements today.

For example, the Dr. Oz show began with the "Vinegar Test." This test supposedly determines whether your supplement will break down in your body - a very important issue. According to Oz, if you heat a cup or so of vinegar to 98-degrees and then drop in a pill, it should dissolve in 30-minutes. The claim is if the pill doesn't dissolve in 30-minute, it won't dissolve in the body. The problem is...this is a bogus test!

Unfortunately, according to many sources including our own Nicole Gould, RD, LD, heated vinegar does not approximate (http://vchoiceblog.com/2010/03/08/uncovering-the-truth-behind-common-dietary-myths/) the acidity of the stomach during digestion, and therefore this test does NOT help determine the quality of a supplement. My fear is countless people will begin tossing away supplements they now believe are now worthless, when in fact, they probably aren't.

While I think this program makes some good points about supplement safety, I do disagree with a variety of the statements and feel others need further explanation. For more, I invite you to listen-in on today's podcast.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/scale1-150x150.jpg)Are you trying to lose weight? We’re often told losing weight is a simple equation – burn more calories than you consume. While technically I suppose this is true, I think most would agree it’s not quite that simple.

One difficulty is trying to determine how many calories you burn. After all, it’s nice that the treadmill estimates me how many calories I’ve burned while running, but how accurate is that and what about the rest of the day? What about those days when I don’t exercise at the gym, but I’m doing errands…or just taking a day off and relaxing? Truly knowing your metabolic rate is critical to reaching your goals and can help take the guesswork out of weight loss. But unfortunately this number has been next to impossible to determine.

Today's podcast with guest Nicole Gould, RD LD discusses how the BodyGem Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test can accurately measure your metabolism and take the guesswork out of weight loss, in less than 10 minutes!

<itunes:subtitle>For those with Celiac disease or other wheat allergies, simply restricting gluten may not be enough to relieve all symptoms or correct deficiencies. Today's podcast discusses five supplements that can offer support. Guest: Nicole Gould, RD LD.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/nowheat-150x150.jpg)Though only a small percentage are diagnosed, an estimated 3 million Americans have Celiac disease, an inherited, immune-mediated intolerance to dietary gluten. Many more suffer from wheat allergies or intolerance.

“Gluten” refers to the protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and some oats. When gluten is consumed, a specific, intense inflammatory response within the small intestinal mucosa occurs that can damage the lining and interfere with digestion and absorption. The longer gluten is consumed, the more the body is damaged and the greater the likelihood of health disorders and complications.

While there is no cure for Celiac disease, eliminating gluten from the diet is the primary treatment. However, simply restricting gluten may not be enough to relieve all symptoms or correct deficiencies. Today's podcast discusses five supplements that can offer support to those suffering from Celiac or wheat intolerance. Guest: Nicole Gould, RD LD.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Beaker-106x150.jpg)Did you know that 50% of those taking multivitamins are still nutritionally deficient? Vitamin, mineral and antioxidant deficiencies have been shown to suppress the function of the immune system which can contribute to a host of degenerative processes. Perhaps the most important point is these deficiencies can occur months and even years before symptoms develop.

In this podcast I'm joined by Vital Choice Healthstore's in-store dietitian Nicole Gould, RD LD to discuss a patented blood test (http://vchoiceblog.com/2010/02/09/are-you-getting-the-nutrients-you-need-2/) to detect nutrient deficiencies that goes far beyond the normal serum levels most doctors use. The end result - a smarter healthier nutrient profile designed to maximize your health.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Today's podcast features a new segment - the TV Week in Review. I've noticed that following a particular news report or just about any Dr. Oz (http://www.doctoroz.com/) show for that matter, the phone starts ringing off the hook with questions.

With this in mind, I thought I would take the most popular issues of the week, and discuss them on the podcast.

This week the winner is Krill Oil (http://www.vchoice.com/search_results.asp?txtPFSearch=Krill&ddlPFBrand=274&ddlPFCat=-1&storeID=WJU4DJ2CQFSR2L1C0G03N0ET9DG2FLQ7&blnPFS=1) as discussed by Dr. Mercola (http://www.mercola.com/) on the Dr. Oz show and Good Morning America's report on the Safety of Fish Oil (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/ConsumerNews/truth-fish-oil-concerns/story?id=9994049).

Note - during this podcast I refer to a previously recorded podcast on the fish oil product Wholemega (http://vchoiceblog.com/2009/07/29/a-whole-new-chapter-in-fish-oil/).</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>There aren't many heart healthier nutrients than CoQ10. Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance that plays a major role in the production of cellular energy called ATP. According to the MayoClinic.com:
CoQ10 levels are reported to decrease with age and to be low in patients with some chronic diseases such as heart conditions, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Some prescription drugs may also lower CoQ10 levels.
As this supplement has gained in popularity so too have the options available.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Reishi_Antler.jpg)Continuing on with our focus on the liver and detoxification from last week's podcast, today we're going to talk about a unique mushroom ability to both detoxify and enhance liver function.

A relatively rare form of the reishi mushroom called Reishi Antler, when prepared as an extract, has been shown to act on immune system cells, to work against herpes virus, to lower cholesterol and stop cell proliferation.

In addition to detoxification, studies have also shown to enhance the liver's production of powerful antioxidants glutathione (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutathione)and SOD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superoxide_dismutase)(superoxide dismutase).

To discuss this further please listen in on my recent conversation with cell biologist and Ph.D. Ann Allworth, national educator for MegaFood.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/trees-300x198.jpg)When is the best time to detoxify? According to today's guest Mary Ellen Derwis-Balaz LMT (http://www.beinthetao.com/about%20Mary%20Ellen.htm), the time is now!

A licensed massage therapist and Chi Nei Tsang Practitioner, Mary Ellen discusses the influence of the Wood element on the body according to Taoist philosophy, and why that makes February and March the best times to cleanse the body. Mary Ellen also discusses how cleansing the liver can enhance the brain and eyes!

A little bit about today's guest: Mary Ellen offers various massage modalities to her clients including Chi Nei Tsang abdominal chi massage. As a licensed Massotherapist for 17+ years she has studied throughout the country and is a NCBTMB provider for Massage therapists. As a Universal Healing Tao practitioner, she offers massage courses and Chi Kung classes throughout the US and Europe. Beginning in March 2010 she is offering a class locally in Meridian stretches that will explore the movement of chi thru the organ systems of the body. To learn more check out her website (http://www.beinthetao.com)or call 216.548.8980.

Finally, during today's podcast I mentioned a gallbladder cleanse used by many people. Here is one recipe, I've known people to use written by blogger Amy Bass:
1-Day Gallbladder Cleanse

One of the most popular Do It Yourself Gallbladder cleanses only takes 1 day. If you want to do this flush, begin first thing in the morning and only eat organic apples. You should eat a minimum of 5 a day. Green apples have shown to be much more effective at softening gallstones than the red ones. Drink nothing but pure water and herbal teas.

Right before going to bed mix 2/3 cup of body temperature olive oil with 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice, sip this, and then retire immediately. Lay only on your right side drawing up your right leg and in the morning all stones should pass in the stool. It is recommended that this one-day flush only be done with the advice of your healthcare provider.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/superfoodgreens-300x241.jpg)Study after study tells us the importance of eating fruits and vegetables not just for the vitamins and minerals, but for the countless photochemicals they contain. I don't think this is big news to anybody.

However, eating the recommended 5-13 (yep, I recently heard 13 servings!!) per day can be difficult. First, it's tough for many people to shop and prepare that many fruits and veggies. Secondly, depending on where you live and the time of year, just finding decent quality produce can be quite a task.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/sawpalmetto-300x225.jpg)A frequent urge to urinate, difficulty going and a weak urine stream are just a few of the fun symptoms we guys get to look forward to as we age thanks to a benign enlargement of the prostate called BPH.

A reality of the male body is that as we age, many of us will develop an enlarged prostate. The prostate then presses on the bladder and/or the urethra causing some, or all, of the above symptoms.

This has not been overlooked by Big Pharma who offer a variety of drugs to combat the symptoms of BPH. However, as is often the case with prescription drugs, side-effects keep many men from wanting or being able to use them.

Today, I'd like to discuss some natural options for supporting the prostate and enhancing urinary health, as well as take a look at what researchers are saying may help to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Guest: Jen Luse.</itunes:summary>

A few weeks back, I discussed Structure-Function claims on the podcast (http://vchoiceblog.com/2009/11/17/already-in-the-normal-range/) and how they affect what a company can and can't place on their label regarding use of their product. My goal was to clear up the confusion over why a product label will read, "Helps maintain healthy blood sugar already in the normal range."

Now, I’d like to briefly review another topic that seems to cause a fair amount of confusion – regulation.

For some, the word regulation is a dirty word. The thought of FDA oversight leading to restricted access and watered down products in the name of safety is a scary concept. Yet for others, even people who regularly use dietary supplements, FDA regulation would be a welcome addition given the common belief that this industry has no regulation at all!

If you find yourself in the later group, wanting regulation of the industry, it may surprise you to learn that the dietary supplement industry has had oversight by the FDA since 1994 when President Clinton signed DSHEA (http://www.fda.gov/food/DietarySupplements/default.htm)(Dietary Supplement Heath & Education Act) into law. There is no better example of the FDA’s power over supplements than its banning of ephedra several years ago.

Not all legislation is bad

If you are in the former group, concerned that more regulation could mean limited access to self directed health, I’d like to make a case that there is a time and place for increased regulation. For example, CMGP (Certified Good Manufacturing Practices (http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm050816.htm)) are a set of rules put in place by the FDA that work to ensure a company is producing a safe, accurately labeled product that is free of impurities. After all, an illegally marketed drug masquerading as a supplement sold on the internet does not do anybody any good.

However, there are folks in Congress that do seem bent on curtailing your access to supplements. With this in mind, it is important to stay informed on the latest potential legislation and to be sure your voice is heard if/when a piece of legislation could be used to limit access. (For more information on current legislation stay tuned to this blog and be sure to visit the Natural Products Association (http://www.naturalproductsassoc.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ic_IssueCenter) website.)

To join in on the conversation, listen in on today’s podcast. I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/angrywoman-225x300.jpg)Okay, so hopefully it's not this bad, (I'm assuming you can see the photo to the left!), but I'm sure it's no secret that stress is everywhere!

For many, instead of tidings of joy, the holidays bring even more stress than usual - fa la la la la that's not good.

Not only does stress take an emotional toll with increased feelings of irritability, anxiety and hotheadedness, stress also takes a significant physical toll on the body. The cardiovascular, immune and endocrine systems are all negatively impacted.

So today, I'm joined by cell biologist and Ph. D. Ann Allworth to discuss how we can alleviate the emotional symptoms of stress while we also combat the damaging physical effects.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/cinnamon-300x200.jpg)Did you know that cinnamon was once more precious than gold? In fact, historians believe the explorations of Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus were partially inspired by the hope of finding new pathways to this herb.

Just imagine if they knew cinnamon could play a role in treating diabetes, metabolic syndrome and weight management!

Research at the USDA and other prestigious institutions suggest that cinnamon assists the body’s conversion of sugar (glucose) into energy thus helping to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Structurefunctionimage.jpg)Have you ever read the packaging of a dietary supplement and seen something like, 'May support healthy cholesterol levels already in the normal range'? Seems a little odd doesn't it? I mean, if your cholesterol scores were already in the normal range why would you be walking the aisle trying to find a cholesterol product?

I've had countless frustrated customers ask me this very question. So today, I want to try and clear up the confusion. The above statement is called a Structure Function Claim and is governed by a very strict guideline that says (essentially) no product may bear a statement that claims to diagnose, mitigate, treat, cure, or prevent disease both explicitly and implicitly.

Seems to make sense until you consider the FDA considers terms like "pain" and "anti-inflammatory" to be disease states. To learn more, I invite you to listen in on this podcast.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>(http://vchoiceblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/calcium-foods-150x150.jpg)Have you heard of the calcium paradox? It seems few have. Basically, the scientific community is finding that calcium supplementation may be a double-edged sword.

One one hand, it's an important component of any good bone-building regimen, yet on the other hand, according to a study in the British Medical Journal (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/bmj.39440.525752.BEv1), calcium supplementation may also be leading to the development of vascular disease. Essentially, calcium may not be getting to the bones where we want it, but rather accumulating in vessel walls, impeding blood flow and leading to heart attack and stroke.

In addition many health experts recommend CoQ10 for anyone taking cholesterol (statin) medications, as those meds have been shown to deplete blood levels of this critical nutrient.

For example, I knew omega-7 (most notably from the Sea Buckthorn plant) had amazing regenerative effects on ulcers, but I didn't know how successful studies are showing it to be.

<itunes:summary>Just today I was asked, "Should I get the flu shot?"

It's a great question that unfortunately, I can't answer for anyone but me. At this point, I have opted against an annual flu shot and have never taken one.

One reason is that the flu shot provides no guarantee that I'm going to remain flu free. Instead, I choose to do everything I can to prepare my immune system to combat any virus or bacteria it comes up against - predicted or not.

In today's podcast, I'd like to share four supplements I take to enhance my natural defenses in lieu of an annual flu shot.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>High blood pressure is a huge problem in the United States contributing each year to over 200,000 deaths. While many think this is an issue synonymous with men's health, the fact is high blood pressure kills six-times more women than breast cancer each year. Clearly it's something we must all take very seriously.

Making matters worse is that many of the prescribed drugs have side effects including dizziness, light-headedness, headache and even kidney problems. Fortunately, there are a number of safe and effective natural approaches to reducing and maintaining healthy blood pressure through various pathways in the body.

In today's podcast we'll discuss these options and what emerging science is saying about their effectiveness. Guest: Jen Luse

<itunes:summary>Did you know that as many as 70-80% of Americans are vitamin D deficient? I can't recall witnessing a greater transformation than that of vitamin D. For years, I think most of us thought of vitamin D as mild mannered calcium helper Clark Kent. However today, thanks to a wealth of new studies, we can say vitamin D is really more akin to Superman given it's importance to health and the prevention of disease.

In fact, one researcher recently stated that as many as 600,000 cases per year of breast and colon cancer could be prevented by increased vitamin D consumption.

That brings me to today's podcast with guest Ann Allworth Ph.D. In this episode we discuss what vitamin D is, how it works in the body, and why it is now said to be one of the most important supplements you could take!

<itunes:subtitle>Today's podcast will discuss Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency and a new fish oil supplement called Wholemega, which delivers the most potent, unadulterated wild Alaskan salmon available.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In April 2009, a Harvard School of Public Health study found Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency ranked as the sixth highest killer of Americans, responsible for a whopping 72,000 to 96,000 preventable deaths yearly. With this in mind, many turn to fish oil supplements as a means of adding these essential fatty acids to the diet.

While fish oil supplements are a good approximation of eating fish, I have recently learned that the processing necessary to create fish oil products, does diminish the overall value of the oil...until now.

Today's podcast will discuss Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency and a new fish oil supplement called Wholemega, which delivers the most potent, unadulterated wild Alaskan salmon available.

<itunes:summary>Too often, I think we tend to look for magic bullets when seeking a solution to health concerns. Infomercials are great at this - promising one product to solve a multitude of woes.

With respect to building healthy bones, marketers have told us that ample amounts of calcium is really all we need to build strong bones. Unfortunately, it just isn't this simple. In fact, we continue to take more supplemental calcium than ever, and yet more Americans than ever are developing brittle bones, osteopenia and osteoporosis.

Don't get me wrong, calcium is very helpful. But it is only one member of the cast. To really build strong bones we need to combine a bio-available form of calcium with a supporting cast of minerals (including magnesium, zinc, strontium and others), vitamin D and, certainly last but not least, vitamin K - among others!

In today's podcast, I'm again joined by Nancy Angelini, PhD to help shed some needed light on the topic of bone health - calcium and beyond.

<itunes:summary>Today's podcast discusses a common misconception when evaluating natural products - milligrams don't necessarily measure potency. So many times I've seen customers choose one product over another based on the amount of milligrams weight - all the while thinking they're making a decision based on potency.

I hope this podcast helps explain away the confusion and helps you make a more informed decision!</itunes:summary>

We discuss reishi and shiitake mushrooms for allergies, maitake for immune and blood pressure as well as a little known mushroom called Lion's Mane that has been shown to be able to re-grow neurons!

For even more on this topic, I highly recommend you watch Paul Stamet's video "6 ways mushrooms can save the world". Here's a link to my quick blog entry (http://vchoiceblog.com/2009/05/13/mushrooms-can-save-the-world/).
