4 Weight Loss Inhibitors

So you’ve tried everything to lose weight. You’ve eaten small frequent meals, you’ve exercised, you’ve taken supplements and still nothing seems to work. If this sounds familiar, you may be running up against a weight loss inhibitor.

On today’s podcast, guest Nicole Gould, RD, LD discusses what she’s found to be the four most common weight loss inhibitors and what you can do about them. We’ll discuss how the thyroid and adrenal glands can impact weight loss, the effects of menopause, the role of stress on weight and finally the vicious cycle of insulin resistance.

I love listening to your podcasts. I am hypothyroid and on synthroid, and just added Thyroid Strength. I was wondering if there is a hormone supplement that helps a little with everything. I am struggling to lose weight and getting no where. I eat healthy and exercise to only gain weight. So frustrated.
    Thank you,
    Robin

  • Hi Robin! First, thanks for the kind words about the podcast. Glad you like it.

I don’t think that there’s any one size fits all approach to hormonal support. The first step is really getting at the route of the imbalance.

Have you ever had a complete hormone panel done? Was it blood or saliva? Some believe a saliva test is actually a better indicator than blood scores. Are you in the Cleveland, Ohio area? If so, I can send along a few practitioners that perform such tests. Here’s a link to our “Find a Practitioner” on vchoice.com. I know several people who have gone to Jeff B. Romig,M.D and Jeffrey A. Potter, R.Ph. and have had positive results.

As for Thyroid Strength, we have had many customers add it to their regimen and see results, but again, it is individualized. Multiple customers have told me that when they added Thyroid Strength it seemed to make their Synthroid more effective.

Do you find stress is an issue? If so, MegaFood also makes a great product called Adrenal Strength. Because the Adrenals and Thyroid are so inter-related, an imbalance in one can often mean an imbalance in the other. Again, I’ve had multiple people use both with great success. In case you missed it, here are the links to the podcasts I did a while back with Ann Allworth PhD on Thyroid and Adrenal Health.

Hopefully this helps a little, but we would like to help more. Please email or call (440-885-9505) if you have more questions. Also, you many also be interested in next week’s podcast. Nicole is back talking about weight loss supplements. One final note – Nicole offers a weight management program that may be of interest to you. She is currently out on maternity leave but once she returns would be more than happy to sit down with you.

    Best of health,
    Mike

My wife had her thyroid removed a few years ago due to cancer and is on medication to keep her levels low to prevent any cancer return. She has exercised diligently and has cut her calory intake drastically but has gained weight substantially after her surgery. Can you suggest anything to help her lose some of the weight that she has gained? The stress of the weight gain has probably contributed to her problem. Prior to the surgery she was always on the thin side.

This was the first time I listened to your Podcast. I am very, very, impressed with this. Once I get close to the weight that I would like to be at; I am definitely going to look into the Fiber supplements that were discussed.
I’m looking forward to the next Podcast. Thanks

  • Hi Ralph, thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, I am unable to give personal medical advice. However, with this said there are a few things I can share in general.

First, it’s important not to cut calories too low as you can actually slow your metabolism even further. How much protein does she consume daily? Studies show diets with less than 70 grams of protein per day can inhibit weight loss. Has your wife worked with someone to help her set up a nutritional plan? Has she ever had a Resting Metabolic Rate test? As the name suggest, this test can help determine an individual’s metabolic rate. This helps better develop an eating plan with effective weight loss in mind.

Second, has your wife had any hormone levels checked beyond her thyroid function? As Nicole indicates, cortisol, estrogen and progesterone all play a role in weight management. Perhaps, there’s something else at play?

Third, what about blood sugar – any reason to suspect insulin resistance?

We really would like to help, but this may require some individual consultation as there are many variables to consider. Nicole Gould, RD, LD (my co-host for the podcast) is currently out on maternity leave but this topic is right up her alley, and she would be more than happy to help. Her email is ngouldrd@gmail.com.

Below is a list of some of the articles/podcasts we’ve done in the past that may help. In fact, I just posted today’s podcast which focuses on some of Nicole’s favorite weight loss supplements. If you have a chance, listen to this one as it may help shed a little more light.

    I can’t lose weight
Protein – how to gain, how to lose, and everything in between
Calorie Restriction May Lead to Weight Gain

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to post additional questions here and I’ll do my best to answer.

  • Margie – thanks so much for your kind words! Here’s a link to the follow-up podcast that just posted today.
