A favorite family turkey chili

As a new mom, I now understand just how difficult balancing work, family, the house and still finding time to cook a healthy meal can be.  So, I wanted to share one of my favorite easy and healthy meals that the whole family will enjoy.

Turkey Chili
(This turkey chili has even been approved by my father, 3 brothers and husband!)

Recipe Yield 7 servings

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1/2 pound extra-lean ground turkey
  • ½ pound lean turkey sausage (if you’re watching sodium, just use 1 pound lean ground turkey)
  • 1 red or green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 (10.75 ounce) cans low sodium tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder*
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes*
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder*
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground cumin*
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper*
  • 1 pinch ground allspice*
  • salt to taste*
  • to save even more time you can use a chili seasoning packet

Directions

  1. Add canola oil to skillet.  Place ground turkey and turkey sausage in the skillet, and cook until evenly brown.
  2. Mix turkey, tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, pepper and onion in a crockpot. Season with chili powder, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, cumin, black pepper, allspice and salt.
