More on the safety of folic acid and folate

On-Air 24/7!

Recently, researchers have begun to question how much folic acid, an isolated b-vitamin, is too much.  Because folic acid is in just about every fortified food on the market, it is believed that many of us are getting very high amounts of folic acid – and this may not be a good thing.

To discuss this topic, as well as answer the question ‘which is better folic acid or folate?’, I’m joined today by Nicole Gould RD, LD.

I take 800 mcg of folate daily, due to my MD and DNA testing and my need for folate. Is there a muti-vitamin without folic acid I could take as a supplement.

  • Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to find a multivitamin without folic acid. Actually, it’s inclusion may be a prerequisite to be legally considered a multivitamin.

Since you’re taking 800mcg folate, have you thought about looking for a multi that contains this level or even the standard 400mcg and then reducing the dose of separate folate you take?

MegFood makes a great 100% whole food multi – Women’s One Daily that includes 800mcg Folate from broccoli. This would allow you to get the 800mcg of folate (from a real food source) as well as the benefits of the other whole food vitamins.
