Well this is just great. I’m not a huge fan of running. My sister likes to run. She’s decided to start running marathons and triathlons and half-ironmans (she’s actually hoping to do an ironman soon. You go Juli!) and all those things that I would never – NEVER – want to. Don’t get me wrong, I like exercising and playing sports that involve running, but running just for the sake of running…that’s just not my speed.
And I guess that’s too bad for my brain because a new study finds that running actually gives your brain a boost.
From Running Boosts Brainpower, Kelli Miller Stacy writes,
“Scientists reporting in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences say that running has a profound impact on the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. Adult mice that voluntarily used running wheels increased their number of brain cells and performed better at spatial learning tests than non-exercising mice, they discovered.”
That’s pretty cool. Until recently, we were told that we did not grow new brain cells after birth yet this and other current research shows that exercise can lead to an increase in new brain cell growth. For my sake, I hope the elliptical machine and the occasional double down the line qualifies…
