Today I’d like to talk about a food that can boost energy, increase endurance and stamina, reduce allergies, enhance liver function and boost immunity. In fact, this food has so many documented benefits that experts like Andrew Weil, MD consume it daily and recommend it as an important component of optimal health.
Unfortunately, most Americans eat little, if any of this food. What is this wonder food? Mushrooms! Now, I’m not talking about the common “button” or portabella mushrooms you find in the grocery store. These may taste good, but impart little health benefits and must be thoroughly cooked to remove a natural carcinogen.
The mushrooms health experts recommend are often called “Medicinal Mushrooms” or “Myco-Medicinals” to draw a distinction from their grocery store counterparts and are most often found in Asian markets. Today I’d like to focus on two that offer special protection and benefits: reishi and cordyceps.
In addition to improving immune function, reishi (ree-shee) shows significant anti-inflammatory effects and reduces allergic responsiveness to environmental and food allergies. In addition, I highly recommend reishi if you’re concerned about your liver as it has significant liver protective qualities. I take it daily as an overall system tonic.
Cordyceps is a great choice for anyone looking to boost endurance, stamina and energy. It won’t offer a quick surge like caffeine, but is a great option especially for athletes. In fact, the 1993 Chinese National Track and Field Team attributed three World Records in part to their use of cordyceps. It’s also very good for the lungs and may help people with asthma.
While there are many brands available, I use the MycoMedicinal line from New Chapter. These products are produced under the supervision of Paul Stamets, considered a preeminent mushroom expert. They are available as capsules and liquid extracts.
